The U.S. Navy reported Monday that an F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter jet assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman was lost overboard while operating in the Red Sea. The incident occurred when the aircraft, along with a tow tractor, went overboard after the crew lost control during towing operations inside the ship’s hangar bay.
Personnel assigned to the towing operation quickly moved clear of the aircraft before the incident, and all crew members were accounted for. One sailor sustained minor injuries.
This marks the second time a fighter jet has been lost from the USS Harry S. Truman. Earlier, in July 2022, an F/A-18 Super Hornet was lost overboard near Naples, Italy, due to unexpected heavy winds. Additionally, in December 2023, an F/A-18 Super Hornet was reportedly shot down in a friendly fire incident during operations in the Red Sea.
Despite the loss, Navy officials confirmed that the Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group, deployed to the Red Sea, remains fully mission-capable. The strike group includes the Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier, Carrier Air Wing 9, three guided-missile destroyers, and the USS Gettylburg cruiser.
The USS Harry S. Truman has been conducting strikes against the Houthi rebels in Yemen following escalated attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea. The Houthi rebels, backed by Iran, have claimed responsibility for multiple attacks on the USS Harry S. Truman and other vessels in the region. These attacks intensified after October 2023, when the group declared solidarity with Hamas following its attacks on Israel.
In response, the U.S. military has engaged in a sustained campaign against the Houthi rebels, targeting over 800 locations since mid-March. These efforts aim to neutralize the group’s capabilities and ensure maritime security in the strategically vital Red Sea.
