Off-Duty New Jersey Police Officer Charged with Home Invasion and Assault

An off-duty police officer in New Jersey has been charged and jailed after allegedly breaking into a residence and assaulting two victims last week.

REBECCA SAYEGH, 32, an off-duty officer with the Toms River Township Police Department, faces charges of home invasion, burglary, and two counts of assault, according to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office. Additional charges include criminal mischief, terroristic threats, and resisting arrest. The incident occurred on April 25 during a domestic disturbance in Berkeley Township.

Authorities were notified around 11:20 p.m. and responded to the scene. Investigators determined that SAYEGH had shattered the front glass door of the residence, entered the home, and assaulted two victims inside. She also damaged the hood of a vehicle belonging to one of the victims, which was parked in the driveway.

Despite resisting arrest, SAYEGH was apprehended at the scene and initially released pending her first court appearance. However, due to the severity of the charges, she was re-arrested via a warrant on April 28, 2025. She is currently held at the Ocean County Jail awaiting a detention hearing.

The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office commended the Berkeley Township Police Department for their swift response and handling of the investigation.

In a separate incident in 2021, SAYEGH was awarded a Class B citation for her heroic actions during a house fire. As one of the first responders, she ensured the safety of the homeowner and their pets, earning recognition for her bravery.
