A New York woman and two young children had a close brush with danger after narrowly avoiding a manhole explosion in Poughkeepsie. The incident, captured on video, occurred on Saturday near Academy and Church Streets, shortly after an Easter egg hunt.
LISA DAVIS, along with her two grandchildren, was walking on the sidewalk when the explosion occurred. “I was like, ‘Oh my God, I don’t know.’ I didn’t know where to go,” DAVIS told ABC News. “I didn’t know what to do except grab my grandson and run.”
Footage shows DAVIS walking over the manhole cover while pushing a stroller alongside a young child. Moments later, the cover exploded, sending debris into the air. The Poughkeepsie Fire Department reported that another manhole on the same block also exploded, narrowly missing three pedestrians.
High levels of carbon monoxide were detected in multiple buildings, leading to the evacuation of all occupants on the block until the gas levels could be mitigated.
A spokesperson for Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corp. explained to Mid Hudson News that the explosion resulted from an electrical fault in an underground cable and was unrelated to the natural gas distribution system.
