The retrial of KAREN READ on murder charges in the death of her boyfriend, JOHN O’KEEFE, took a dramatic turn Friday as prosecutors and defense attorneys focused on whether O’Keefe was alive to hear Read’s last words before his death on January 29, 2022. The proceedings centered on testimony from responding paramedics and forensic experts, with both sides attempting to frame the evidence to support their cases.
During the trial, it was revealed that Read, along with KERRY ROBERTS and JENNIFER MCCABE, discovered O’Keefe buried under a pile of snow outside another officer’s home in Canton, Massachusetts. Read reportedly told paramedics about an argument she had with O’Keefe during the ambulance ride to the hospital, a point both sides acknowledged. However, the context and timing of this argument became a focal point of contention.
JASON BECKER, a Canton firefighter and paramedic, testified that Read mentioned having an argument with O’Keefe, whom she referred to as her “husband.” Becker and his partner, DANIEL WHITLEY, both stated they believed Read was O’Keefe’s wife during the incident. Special prosecutor HANK BRENNAN pressed Becker on why he didn’t seek further details about the argument. Becker responded, “We didn’t think we would be witnesses in a murder trial. We were there to support Karen and ultimately get her to the hospital safely.”
Defense attorney ALAN JACKSON challenged the notion that the argument occurred immediately before O’Keefe’s death, suggesting it could have taken place earlier in the evening. Jackson also questioned whether Read’s comments referred to voicemails or missed calls, which she allegedly showed to Becker. Becker confirmed that Read attempted to display missed calls on her phone but did not connect her distress to the content of the voicemails.
Forensic testimony also played a significant role in Friday’s proceedings. Dr. GARREY FALLER, who oversaw the pathology lab when Read was admitted on January 29, 2022, testified that her blood alcohol level was .093% when tested just after 9 a.m. that morning. Prosecutors highlighted Read’s earlier admission to spiking her own drinks with extra shots at the Waterfall Bar and Grille, which she and O’Keefe left around midnight.
Earlier in the day, jurors visited the crime scene at 34 Fairview Road in Canton, where police had placed Read’s Lexus SUV in the street to demonstrate the location of a broken taillight. The trial, initially expected to last six to eight weeks, concluded its first week of testimony with heightened tension and dramatic revelations.
