Florida Halts Arrests of Undocumented Migrants Following Federal Judge’s Order

Florida Attorney General JAMES UTHMEIER has directed state law enforcement to cease arrests of undocumented migrants under a new immigration law, following a federal judge’s reinforced restraining order against the state. The decision comes after U.S. District Judge KATHLEEN WILLIAMS expressed astonishment during a Friday hearing over the state’s continued arrests despite her prior order to halt enforcement earlier this month.

JAMES UTHMEIER issued a letter to state officials, mandating compliance with the judge’s order, even as he conveyed disagreement with the ruling. This directive follows revelations that authorities have made 15 arrests in the past two weeks, including one involving a U.S. citizen born in Georgia.

Last week, 20-year-old JUAN CARLOS LOPEZ GOMEZ was detained near the Florida-Georgia border after being pulled over by Florida Highway Patrol. Gomez was held under the new immigration law, signed by Governor RON DESANTIS in February, and charged with illegal entry into Florida. He was released the following day after his mother presented his birth certificate, Social Security card, and state identification card in court.

The next hearing regarding the state’s enforcement of the law is scheduled for April 29.
