NEWARK, Del. – A fatal vehicle crash involving a stolen U-Haul van left one person dead and several others injured near the University of Delaware’s campus on Tuesday afternoon, according to local authorities. The Newark Police Department reported that officers identified a U-Haul van parked on the street around 4:30 p.m. that had been reported as an unauthorized use vehicle. The van, originally rented but not returned by its due date on March 18, was flagged for suspicious activity. As officers attempted to apprehend the suspects inside, the individuals fled in the vehicle, striking a marked police car and multiple pedestrians in the process.

The suspects, identified as the driver and a passenger, ignored police commands and sped away, hitting two pedestrians standing near a parked vehicle. The van then collided with several other parked cars before becoming disabled. One pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene, while another sustained serious injuries. Three additional individuals were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and three others declined medical treatment after being treated for minor injuries.
