Private Equity Executive RYAN HEMPHILL Accused of Operating Torture Chamber in NYC Apartment

Manhattan prosecutors have unveiled shocking allegations against RYAN HEMPHILL, a 43-year-old private equity executive and lawyer, accusing him of using a New York City apartment as a torture chamber where he subjected six women to horrific acts of violence, including rape, physical assault, and psychological abuse. HEMPHILL has pleaded not guilty to a 116-count indictment, which includes charges of predatory sexual assault and other crimes dating back to October 2022. If convicted, he faces life in prison.

According to prosecutors, HEMPHILL lured his victims through dating websites such as Seeking.com, SugarDaddy, SugarDaddyMeet, FetLife, and Craigslist, offering them money for sex and companionship. Authorities revealed that he often paid the women with counterfeit money. To conceal his crimes, HEMPHILL allegedly threatened his victims, falsely claiming to have extensive resources and connections to law enforcement and organized crime, warning them they would be arrested or killed if they reported him.

The details of the case are harrowing. Investigators discovered that HEMPHILL’s apartment was equipped with multiple surveillance cameras, and they recovered footage showing dozens, if not hundreds, of other women, many of whom were naked and blindfolded. Manhattan Assistant District Attorney MIRAH CURZER described the evidence during a hearing before Judge ANN SCHERZER, where HEMPHILL was present. Authorities also found hundreds of bullets, high-capacity magazines, and a significant quantity of drugs, including heroin, cocaine, amphetamines, and fentanyl.

Prosecutors detailed how HEMPHILL allegedly manipulated his victims by convincing them to share their past sexual traumas, which he then reenacted during the assaults. He reportedly forced or tricked the women into ingesting drugs that left them unconscious or severely impaired. The abuse included repeated slapping, punching, and restraining them with handcuffs and other devices. In one instance, a victim was left shackled to HEMPHILL’s bed as she pleaded for her release.

The depravity extended to the use of a cattle prod, a shock collar, and psychological torture, including threats with guns and knives, urination, and verbal humiliation. Some victims were allegedly coerced into recording videos falsely stating their consent to the abuse, which HEMPHILL reportedly used to intimidate them into silence.

Judge SCHERZER ordered HEMPHILL to remain in custody, citing concerns about his potential to flee the country due to his wealth, connections, and history of philanthropy and family real estate holdings. The judge emphasized the extreme lengths HEMPHILL appeared willing to go to evade justice.

New York Police Department Commissioner JESSICA S. TISCH condemned the alleged crimes, stating, “The details in this case are beyond disturbing — a sustained, calculated campaign of violence and cruelty that targeted vulnerable women. This kind of predatory abuse has no place in our city and will be met with the full force of the law.”
